In a way, Lovecraft himself transcended the boundaries between horror and science fiction, by starting first in horror, and then as his works moved on, science fiction elements were added in, until it became a cosmic horror. Thus the differences between Lovecraft and his inspiration, Edgar Allan Poe.

The Thing has long been my favorite movie, although The Lighthouse has recently challenged it, but they both have similar themes of paranoia, isolation, and distrust. I love your videos and cheer anytime someone has the perceptiveness to recognize what a masterpiece The Thing is.

I get what you're going for but the title for this kinda weird. Frieren didn't really fix an issue that isekai has because it's not an isekai itself, so it's not really in the position to fix isekai problems.

"I know that Frieren is not an Isekai, I have never said that it was, and I thought I made it pretty clear by explaining what the sub-genre was in the video." Ah yes, the "It's not clickbait, why are you saying it's clickbait! I clearly explained that they solved isekai's main issue by not being isekai" defense

Great video, at first I didn't watch Frieren but after hearing about how great it was I decided to give it a try, and man was it worth it. It's refreshing to have a fantasy anime that really cares for everything it sets, it's not adventure after adventure, it's a long journey where every encounter has a significance. And the evolution of the lore, for instance the evolution of the Zoltraak spell, and it's not just that. But I think what surprised me the most, was the excellent quality of the anime, the pace, the ambiance, it's one of the really few anime that had me being like "Damn it was good, this might be the end of the episode after so many things happened. Hold on, I'm only at half the episode?", and it shows an anime doesn't have to be full action. Speaking of which the fights are so great, none of the characters scream while fighting, the music isn't that epic, the fights too are slow paced, but still resolve faster than most animes, because the characters don't speak that much, we don't hear them think through half the battle, they speak through their fists (or spells), which make the fights really compelling without the need for over-epicness, exploding our hears with loud screams, musics, huge sword impacts. Also flashbacks, this anime put flashbacks only to tell more story when needed, it never shows a scene that happened 20 seconds ago, and also there's no flashbacks in battles.

Frieren is NOT AN ISEKAI. Illiterate weebs think ISEKAI means medieval fantasy, it doesn't. Alice in Wonderland is more of an isekai than Frieren.

I think the initial failure of "The Thing" can be explained by comparing it to another science fiction horror film that succeeded. James Cameron script for "Aliens" gave us a lot of memorable dialogue, whereas I'm not sure there's all that many lines from "The Thing" that are as often quoted. Now, Kurt Russell is terrific as Macready, but aside from him, is there a character in "The Thing" that anybody but a committed fan remembers by name the way most can with Ripley, Newt, Bishop, Hicks, Vasquez and Hudson from "Aliens"? If Lancaster's script had more thoroughly developed the characters, and maybe provided a little more humour, too, I think audiences might've been more inclined to flock to "The Thing" the way they did in '86 with "Aliens."

The year ET won best special effects, it ran against Blade Runner. I lost my trust of the Oscar's that year, because while you could argue ET did deserve a win in other categories, and special effects Blade Runner was clearly much more cutting edge, technically challenging, with superb and results. I would have considered Blade Runner losing to The Thing for special effects a genuine disagreement over two movies with entirely different, but excellent special effects for the environment that was chosen. ET was sweet, but it wasn't IMHO Oscar level special effects, especially for 1982! You can argue for Alien, too - which is why I cannot fathom with all the awesome movies in 1982, choosing ET for winning special effects. :(

Saw The Exorcist for the first time at a drive-in theatre. We were tossing up whether or not to hang around for the second feature “something called The Thing”. We hung around. By the end of the movie, we had forgotten all about the first feature. Classic example horror and paranoia.

I like you have to lie/ misrepresent other stories to prop up Freiren. My dude, this video is impossible to make since you have to have complete knowledge of Freiren AND all the shows you are comparing it to. Genre analysis is notoriously difficult.

  • @RoanoraZoro123

You mean the same Freiren which barely builds a location before moving on in 10 minutes. You have the gall to compare it to Re Zero with actual fleshed out locations. You must be tripping.

John Carpenter is very under rated. I've greatly enjoyed every one of his movies. They have a strong emotional component, but are not merely emotion driven. They are thought provoking, socially relevant, and offer great insight into human psychology and sociology. Speilberg should have every award repossessed for his gawdawful remake of the classic War of the Worlds. That was a crime against humanity.

You would think that after centuries of writing narratives, the understanding of how society functions constantly improving and each culture across the world evolving, every story in media would be as good as this, but instead we get isekai power fantasy trash 😭

The interesting connection to reality is that those who today that profess to be the _resistance_ are the modern day useful idiots going on like bleating sheep, repeating the media & Hollyweird lines to support their Democrap illiberal party of authoritarian Dictator's. People are waking up, the Uniparty is collapsing under it's thirst for perpetual war, the quiet part is being sai outloud & people are aware of the fuckery. When telling the truth is a revolutionary act...
